Message from the Principal
24th April, 2015

Dear Parents and Students,

With profound grief and sadness, I regret to inform you that Dr. Rayson Huang (黃麗松博士) left us on 8th April 2015 in England.  Sorrowful as it was to learn of his departure, we are assured that he is now resting in God’s hands, and are very much privileged to have such a distinguished alumnus as Dr. Huang, whose achievements have brought glory to Munsang College and the Hong Kong education sector.

Dr. Rayson Huang was our alumnus of Class 1937, a year which was seething with turmoil and encroachments by foreign powers in China.  His personal legacy, in the meantime, attested to robustness and resilience of Munsang, which tided itself over during the days of turbulence in the city.

Dr. Huang was also the first Chinese Vice Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong.  This put him in the top echelon in education before the days of the handover.  He made enormous contributions to the community by overseeing the development of the tertiary education, as well as facilitating a smooth transition of the city in its socio-political fabric to the sovereignty of our motherland.

Last, and definitely not the least, Dr. Huang was the son of our founding principal, Mr. Rufus Huang (黃映然創校校長).  Words fail us in our gratitude to the Huangs for their guiding hands that laid Munsang on a solid foundation as it is blessed with today.

To commemorate Dr. Rayson Huang, the following activities will be held:

1. Memorial Service on 8th May 2015 (Fri)
    All F.1 to F.5 students Munsang College and student representatives of Munsang College Primary School are requested to attend a Memorial Service scheduled for 8th May 2015 (Fri) from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the School Hall. Parents and alumni are also invited to attend the service.

2. Condolence Expression from 24th April 2015 (Fri)
    From 24th April 2015 (Fri) onwards, all stakeholders of the Munsang Family are welcome to convey condolences to Dr. Rayson Huang in the Administration Centre, Munsang College.

May Dr. Rayson Huang rest in peace. Glory to Munsang.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Parents and Students,

Please take note of the following:
F.1 – F.5 Second Term Form Test Timetable
(Please refer to Appendix 1.)

Remarks:
  1. Students should refer to school homepage and AAC bulletin board for the seating arrangement (which is different from those in the First Term Form Test and Examination).
  2. Students should arrive at the examination centre 15 minutes before the test commences.  Late candidates will not be given extra time to compensate for the time loss.
  3. There is no lesson for F.1 – F.5 after the test.  Students are advised to go home immediately for revision. The normal lesson timetable will resume on 1st April 2015 (Wed, Day 6).
  4. No supplementary test would be arranged for absentees.
  5. Students are strongly advised to work hard for the Form Test and strive for their best.
F.1 – F.3 Performance Booster
In order to improve the academic performance of F.1 to F.3 students who have obtained unsatisfactory results in Chinese, English, and/or Mathematics (core subjects), the Academic Affairs Committee has arranged a remedial program, Performance Booster for them in the Second Term.

Students who failed in any of the core subjects (except Liberal Studies) in either the First Term Examination or the Second Term Form Test will be selected to join the Performance Booster from late April to May. Parents are reminded to encourage students to try their best in academic pursuit and strive for a real balance between academics and activities.

F.3 Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA)
TSA for F.3 classes (Speaking Tests in Chinese Language and English Language) has been scheduled for 21st April 2015 (Tue, Day 2) from 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. All F.3 students are strongly encouraged to adopt a serious attitude towards the assessments.

Earth Hour 2015 – 28th March 2015, 8:30 p.m.
Global warming is a real and serious threat to all of us.  To help reduce carbon dioxide emission which is one of the major causes of climate change, the school has taken steps to save energy such as avoiding non-essential air-conditioning.

In 2008, the global Ecological Footprint was 1.5 times what the planet could provide; meaning it would take 1.5 years for the Earth to regenerate the renewable resources which mankind used in a year.  In Hong Kong today, the situation is even more severe.  According to the latest research by the World Wildlife Fund (“WWF”) and Global Footprint Network, if everyone on Earth were to live the way Hong Kong does, humanity would require 3.1 Earths to meet its needs.

Earth Hour, organised by WWF, is the world's largest collective environmental action involving individuals, communities, businesses and governments across the world.  Participation is simple: as many people and organizations as possible turn off their non-essential lights at the appointed time for one hour.  This collective action sends a powerful message: everyone wants a sustainable future.

This year, Earth Hour 2015 will be held on 28th March 2015 at 8:30 p.m.  We earnestly hope that you would also participate in the event by turning off the lights at home for an hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on that day.  For more information, please visit the website of the WWF-Hong Kong at “https://earthhour.wwf.org.hk/en/”.  Your participation and contribution are highly appreciated.

Vigilance against Seasonal Influenza
According to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP), the current influenza activity in Hong Kong is still at a high level and is expected to remain at a high level for some time.  To prevent outbreaks of influenza or other respiratory infections, we would continue to actively check the body temperature of all students every day when they arrive at school so as to identify students with fever.  Students with fever and respiratory symptoms are strongly advised not to attend school till 48 hours after fever has subsided.  In addition, you are advised of the following measures to prevent influenza and respiratory tract infection:
  • To receive seasonal influenza vaccination for personal protection;
  • To build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
  • To maintain good personal and environmental hygiene;
  • To keep hands clean and wash hands properly;
  • To cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and dispose of nasal and mouth discharge properly;
  • To wash hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose;
  • To maintain good ventilation;
  • To avoid going to crowded or poorly ventilated public places when influenza is prevalent; high-risk individuals may consider putting on surgical masks when staying in such places; and
  • To wear surgical mask and seek medical advice promptly if symptoms of respiratory tract infection or fever develop.
Teaching Interflow & Staff Development Day
Teaching Interflow between teachers of our school and other renowned local secondary schools, who will pay us a visit and share with us their teaching experience, has been scheduled from 9th February 2015 to 25th March 2015.

To allow students time for preparing for the Form Test and facilitate teachers to reflect on the interflow, a staff development program has been arranged in the afternoon on 25th March 2015 (Wed) and the afternoon classes of all levels on that day will be cancelled.  Students are strongly advised to make good use of the afternoon and work hard for the Form Test.

Dear Parents and Students,

Campus Development Project, CROSS
Consultation Forums

Following the Education Bureau’s funding approval of a new school hall for the secondary school, the school administration was given an opportunity to review the overall provision of campus facilities.  With an aim to enhance the learning and teaching environment of all three schools at the Munsang College campus in Kowloon City, it was decided to capitalize on this opportune time to redevelop the campus to create more classrooms and facilities for special purposes.

For this infrastructure development project, we have commissioned a distinguished consultant, AD+RG Architecture Design and Research Group Ltd., to conduct design and feasibility studies.  However, before moving forward, we would like to seek the views of parents, students and alumni on the preliminary design concept.  Therefore, we would like to cordially invite you to attend one or both of the two consultation forums slated to be held next week.

Dear Parents and Students,

School's Stance on Class Boycott

As a Christian college that emphasizes love, understanding, reconciliation and respect for differences, we acknowledge and support the ideal of freedom of speech and encourage students to present their opinions in a peaceful and rational manner.

We, as our stakeholders, do believe that classroom teaching is an important part of student learning and will continue our tradition of providing unbiased education in class.  Also we have the responsibility to ensure that students’ learning progress is unimpeded and learning is facilitated in a safe environment.

In view of the recent calls to boycott classes (罷課) in the society, we understand that parents and students may share diverse views and opinions.  Irrespective of the stance held, we urge parents to take up the opportunity to scrutinize the issues together with their children, to remind them of the importance of critical thinking in analyzing the issue and to consider the possible consequences of their actions.

With every challenge, there are opportunities.  While we see this as an avenue for us to develop students’ sensitivity, sophistication and rigour, we would invite parents to stand alongside us in guiding students to nurture a comprehensive view that recognizes the presence of multiple perspectives.

On one hand, as our children will become leaders of tomorrow, we must help them to learn to become independent thinkers, who make informed decisions based on thorough analysis of facts and opinions.  On the other hand, we feel obliged to request them to secure their parents’ consent if they are to engage themselves in any public or political activity.

Regardless of the uncertainty that has yet to unfold, we will do our best to maintain the normal functioning of school operations according to school regulations and offer assistance where appropriate.  Should you have any concerns and enquiries, or even requests for special arrangements, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Luk Kai Ho, Discipline Master at 3655 3329, or Mr. Lui Hang Sum, Assistant Principal, at 3655 3336.

May God bless us with peace, guidance and wisdom in need.

Yours sincerely,

Kuby CHAN
